OC Transpo extends fare evasion blitz

OC Transpo handed out more than 900 tickets to fare evaders in a crackdown on fare evasion in September.

Twelve inspectors fanned out across the bus and train network between Sept. 3 and 30 and handed out 904 provincial offence notices. Of those, 415 were issued on buses and 489 on the LRT. Another 15 warnings were issued.

Fare evasion is a provincial offence and carries a fine of $260.

“The purpose was to educate, reduce lost revenues and, of course, protect the integrity of the fare system,” OC Transpo’s head of security, Duane Duquette, told members of the transit commission Thursday.

“What isn’t captured in the metrics, of course, is the thousands of interactions and conversations with members of the public and where most of the feedback is positive.”

The fare blitz has been so successful that Transit General Manager Renée Amilcar has asked it to be continued until the end of the year, Duquette said.
