A 33-year-old male from Williamstown was pronounced dead at the scene Monday after a freight train hit a pickup truck just east of Lancaster.

The collision happened shortly before 2 p.m. at a crossing just east of Lancaster, which is just over 100 kilometres southeast of Ottawa, the Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Tuesday.

Officers from the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry OPP detachment, the South Glengarry Fire Service and Cornwall-Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry paramedics responded to the scene on a private laneway along Old Highway 2, the release stated.

The deceased was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the collision, police said.

The investigation continues.
