An investigation by OPP detectives confirmed excessive speed was the main factor in an Aug. 2 motorcycle crash that claimed the lives of two Ottawa men.

“The investigation has determined that both motorcycles were travelling at extremely high speed prior to the incident,” OPP said in a release issued Thursday.

“It has also been confirmed that speed was a contributing factor in the collision.”

It happened on Highway 416 near Highway 417 late Friday evening, Aug. 2.

One of the motorcycle drivers was pronounced dead at the scene. The other died shortly afterwards in hospital.

Police did not identify the victims at the time. But later that weekend the Gatineau Olympiques junior hockey team said online that one of the victims was Creed Jones, a popular former goalie for the Olympiques.

The Gatineau team said it would honour Jones at an upcoming game Sept. 28 against the Rimouski Océanic, another of Smith’s former teams.

The investigation included officers from Ottawa detachment, and collision reconstructionists and technical collision investigators, the OPP said.
