It was a sort of fish in a barrel event Saturday for provincial police at the site of a transport truck and trailer rollover on Highway 401 westbound at Shannonville Road near Belleville.

A total of 18 drivers — including two transport truckers — received a $615 “reminders” to stay off their phones and focus on the road, as they passed the collision scene.

All 18 drivers were suspected of videoing the crash site while operating their vehicles.

“Your attentiveness to driving helps keep emergency workers safe at these scenes,” OPP said in a social media message.

In another post on X, the Ottawa OPP said Friday night they had, while conducting a RIDE check earlier that night, charged a person with using a cellphone while driving.

“One driver stopped was watching TikTok while driving!” police said in the post about the incident.

The charge carries a $615 fine, three demerit points and a three-day driving suspension upon conviction, police said.
