Ottawa Coun. Matt Luloff has been charged with impaired driving, his lawyer confirmed Monday.

Luloff represents the Orléans East-Cumberland ward and serves as Ottawa Public Library Board chair. Last year, the Conservative Party of Canada announced Luloff as its candidate for the Orléans riding in the next federal election.

The CPC confirmed Monday afternoon that Luloff stepped down from his candidacy effective July 10, citing personal reasons.

Luloff’s defence lawyer, Lawrence Greenspon, said Monday he intends to defend his client on the charge.

“There was no accident involved. We will be defending Mr. Luloff and he is to be presumed innocent,” Greenspon said Monday.

The allegations have not been tested in court. Luloff is set to appear in court on Aug. 8, Greenspon said.

When contacted Monday, Luloff directed all personal legal questions to his lawyer.

Luloff, who was elected to a second term as councillor for Orléans East-Cumberland in 2022 with 74 per cent of the vote, was born and raised in the city’s east end.

Luloof is a former member of the Canadian Armed Forces, beginning in 2003 when he joined the Governor General’s Foot Guards army reserve unit.

He transferred to the regular force in 2006 with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. He deployed to Afghanistan in 2008 and returned in 2009.
