Ottawa firefighters contain blaze at Richmond seniors centre

Quick work Friday night by Ottawa Fire Services managed to contain a fire at a seniors centre before it could spread.

A caller reported at about 7:11 p.m. that smoke was visible from a room in a seniors residence on Perth Street in the Richmond area.

Crews arriving at the scene declared a working fire and additional resources were deployed.

Firefighters advanced a hose line inside the structure.

The fire scene was in an area of the city with no hydrants, so firefighters used a shuttle system to bring water to the scene from a water source.

Firefighters completed two searches of the structure and no occupants were found inside.

Victim services personnel and an OC Transpo bus were dispatched  to provide shelter and assistance for the residents.

The fire was declared under control at 8:06 p.m.

An investigator was dispatched to the scene to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
