Ottawa firefighters quell two overnight fires in Vanier and Orléans

Ottawa firefighters fought two fires in the early hours of Jan. 28.

Around 1:20 a.m., firefighters were called to a commercial and residential building in the 300 block of Shakespeare Street in Vanier. Multiple 911 callers reported smoke in the basement and a fire in the store on the main level.

Smoke was visible from the three-storey building when firefighters arrived. Firefighters searched the building for people and an OC Transpo bus was at the scene to provide shelter for the residents.

The fire was declared under control at 3 a.m. At approximately the same time, another call came in, this time for a townhouse in the 1400 block of Briarfield Crescent in Orléans.

That fire was declared under control just minutes later, and was contained to its area of origin before it could spread.

In both cases, Ottawa Fire Service’s victim services were dispatched to the scene, as well as an investigator, to determine the fire’s origins.
