A 26-year-old Ottawa man has been charged after what Ottawa police described as hate-motivated incidents in the Rideauview area.

The West Criminal Investigations Section began to investigate, with support from the hate and bias crime unit, after police received reports of incidents that began in July 2023.

Zachary Smith was charged on Monday with: mischief/damage to property; uttering threats of death or bodily harm; uttering threats of property damage; and harassment by threatening conduct to another person, the Ottawa Police Service said in a news release Tuesday.

Police said they encourage anyone who witnesses or experiences such incidents to report them. “Reporting hate-motivated incidents is an important step in stopping cycles of hatred,” the release stated.
