Ottawa police arson squad investigating commercial fire on Hazeldean Road

The Ottawa Police Service arson unit was investigating after fire caused millions of dollars in damage to a commercial building in the 400 block of Hazeldean Road in the city’s west end early on Tuesday.

The incident has displaced many businesses, police added in a Tuesday afternoon news release.

It added that police were looking for anyone with dash- or surveillance-camera video of suspicious activity in the area of Castlefrank Road and Hazeldean Road between 1:30 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Anyone with information about the fire was asked to contact the police arson unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 4587 or by email at arson@ottawapolice.ca.

Ottawa Fire Services said the blaze was reported just after 3:30 a.m., when a 911 caller spotted heavy black smoke coming from one of the businesses in the commercial strip mall.

A “second alarm” was declared at 3:57, calling additional fire resources to the scene.

Ottawa Fire Services said the blaze spread through the roof and the walls of four units, but firefighters were able to contain it before it spread throughout the entire complex.

No occupants were found inside the structure, nor were any injuries reported.

The fire was declared under control at 7:37, Ottawa Fire Services said.
