Say it ain’t snow, because it’s freezing rain.
A low-pressure system sweeping through the region is likely to bring freezing rain to the city Monday evening lasting into Tuesday morning, Environment Canada said in a freezing rain warning issued midday Nov. 25.
With temperatures expected to hover at zero degrees, the weather agency said the conditions were ripe for the frozen stuff to fall. But because it’s early in the season and temperatures have been relatively high, it isn’t clear how much will stick around.
“The freezing rain may be heavy at times over a few areas overnight with a transition to rain Tuesday morning or late Tuesday morning,” the statement said. “Some ice accretion is possible on surfaces with about 1 to 3 millimetres of ice accretion.”
While the icy conditions were expected in the Ottawa area Nov. 25, the same weather system could bring as much as 10 cm of snow to the Algonquin region west of the city, according to the weather service.
There’s a 30-40 per cent chance of flurries later in the week as temperatures drop.
