Environment Canada called Wednesday 2024’s first “one-day heat event” in Ottawa.
A lot of Ottawans called it a great time to get out and enjoy the sunshine a full two weeks before summer begins on June 20.
It was hot and humid, with sunshine all day, as the temperature steadily climbed from 18 C at six in the morning to 24 by 9 a.m. to 28 at noon before peaking at 31 by 4 p.m. During the warmest part of the day, the humidex made it feel like 36.

“These conditions pose a health risk when you are not used to the heat,” Environment Canada said in a special weather statement at about noon Wednesday. “Everyone is at risk from heat, especially older adults; infants and young children; and people with chronic illnesses.
The weather office urged people to “drink plenty of cool liquids before feeling thirsty; and keep cool by dressing for the weather and spending more time in a cool place.”
As of 6 p.m., an Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesperson said that they were not aware of any heat-related calls on Wednesday, although the information for the day, at that time, was still incomplete.
Those who don’t like it hot will get a break from steamy conditions on Thursday. The temperature was supposed to drop to about 21 C overnight and remain close to that through the day, with a 40 per cent chance of showers in the morning, with showers beginning near noon and a risk of a thunderstorm throughout the day.
Things are expected to trend that way on the weekend, with the forecast highs no more than 20 C and a good chance of rain each day through Monday.
