A police investigation shuttered all of Ottawa’s public libraries and the attached recreation and cultural facilities on Friday afternoon.

No details about the investigation were immediately available, but an Ottawa Police Service spokesperson said the situation was considered to be a threat to public safety.

The City of Ottawa advised people to “avoid these areas until further notice,” but did not immediately provide an estimate for when the libraries would reopen.

“The safety of residents is our top priority and we advise the public to avoid these areas. Further information will be provided as it is available,” Dan Chenier, the city’s general manager of cultural, recreation and facility services, said via email.

The Ottawa Public Library has more than 30 branches across the city.
