Pumpkin Derby rocks Lansdowne for Halloween

A lively crowd of fans of pumpkin racing had an excellent time Sunday at the annual Lansdowne Park Pumpkin Derby.

The rules were simple: Design a pumpkin race car and let your imagination run wild to create an eye-catching racer.

In most cases, the pumpkin’s looks trumped actual performance.

Some budding engineers added wing-like attachments to their racers, while others obviously believed that gaudy decorations are key to top performance.

As the contest got closer to the end, there was carnage with pieces of the decorated gourds falling off. Most of the pumpkin pilots accepted the damage as part of high-stakes pumpkin racing.

Eccentric Adam, who some may recognize as his alter-ego Zedd, the CHEO therapeutic clown, kept the energy and excitement alive at the start line of the races.
