Rain prompts some Ottawa event organizers to pivot

The heavy rain expected in Ottawa this weekend has prompted organizers of some outdoor events to adjust their plans by either moving indoors or putting up tents.

Odyssey Theatre was able to shift Saturday’s arts fair program from Strathcona Park to Arts Court, 2 Daly Ave. “It may be wet outside, but the Fair is on (and dry) inside,” organizers said in a statement. Another update is expected Sunday, the fair’s final day.

On Somerset Street between Bank and O’Connor, volunteers at the new Spectrum Street Festival, a free, inclusive party that runs while the street is closed during Capital Pride, had to close the bouncy castle and giant sandbox because of the weather.

But they were able to erect a tent over the main stage in preparation for the afternoon and evening performances by comedian Janelle Niles, musicians Tennessee Cree, J. Morris and Aspects and drag queen Cedar T.

Meanwhile, organizers of Ottawa’s 49th annual GreekFest said all activities will go ahead, rain or shine. The annual celebration attracts up to 20,000 people during each of its two weekends. It runs Aug. 16-18 and Aug. 23-25 at 1315 Prince of Wales Dr.

Spokesperson Emmanuel Kardaras said some of the main-stage performances would be moved into the event’s large tent if necessary, and their Multicultural Night show was expected to unfold as scheduled on Saturday evening.

One of the main attractions of GreekFest is the food court, with menu items that include dolmades, souvlaki, baklava and more. Kardaras said people are sheltered when they order, and can eat in the tent or take it home.

Also popular is the Zorba Show nightly at 8:45 p.m., with Greek dancing, crowd participation and a circle of fire.

Admission to the festival is free.
