Remnants of Hurricane Beryl could bring significant rainfall to Ottawa later this week.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for Ottawa on Monday afternoon, warning of possible “torrential downpours” with rainfall rates of 20 to 40 mm of rain per hour at times, with localized rainfall totals possibly “well in excess” of 50 mm.

The weather system is expected to hit Ottawa beginning late Tuesday night or Wednesday, and continue into Thursday, the weather service said.

“Although confidence in the exact track of the weather system is low, these types of systems in the past have given very high rainfall rates in torrential downpours,” the special weather statement said. “Rainfall warnings may be issued as confidence in the track of the system increases.”

Beryl, the earliest storm to develop into a Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean, caused at least 11 deaths as it passed through the Caribbean islands last week.

The storm hit the Texas coast as a Category 1 Hurricane on Monday before being downgraded to a tropical storm, knocking out power to more than two million homes and businesses in the Houston area.
