Six chef-testants will cook off in September for a chance to represent Ottawa at the 2025 Canadian Culinary Championship next February.

Four of the competitors have taken part in previous years in the regional qualifying event, which is the Ottawa edition of Canada’s Great Kitchen Party and was previously known as Gold Medal Plates.

They are: chef Kristine Hartling of Oz Kafe on York Street, who won bronze last year; chef Dominique Dufour of Buvette Daphnée on William Street; chef Jason Sawision of Stofa Restaurant on Wellington Street West; and Patrick Garland of Absinthe on Wellington Street West. In 2014, Garland came first ahead of nine other chefs in Ottawa’s Gold Medal Plates competition and moved on to the national event.

The two first-timers at the Sept. 25 event, to be held at the Fairmont Château Laurier, work on Elgin Street: chef Lizardo Becerra of Raphaël Peruvian Cuisine and chef Mitch Lacombe of Gitanes.

The winner will advance to compete against nine other chefs at the Canadian Culinary Championship in Ottawa in February 2025.

Three Ottawa chefs have in past years won the Canadian Culinary Championship: Atelier’s Marc Lepine, who has won twice the national title; chef Briana Kim, whose next restaurant, Antheia, is eagerly awaited; and chef Yannick La Salle, formerly of Les Fougères in Chelsea, who now cooks for Supreme Court of Canada judges.
