Check those water-quality ratings before heading to your favourite beach.

Both Ottawa and the National Capital Commission have issued “not recommended for swimming” advisories for some of the beaches in the national capital and in Gatineau Park.

On Wednesday, the NCC announced that Breton and Parent beaches at Philippe Lake were closed to swimming “until further notice” after recent water-quality tests that followed heavy rainstorms earlier this week.

During swimming season, Gatineau Park beaches are tested every week for bacteriological water quality, the NCC posted online.

Besides Breton and Parent, Smith Beach on Philippe Lake is also closed for the season.

As of Wednesday afternoon, though, O’Brien and Blanchet beaches at Meech Lake were open for swimming, as were Leamy Lake and La Pêche Lake, with water quality ratings from “good” to “excellent.”

On the Ontario side of the Ottawa River, City of Ottawa advisories on Wednesday said Petrie River and Britannia Bay beaches were open for swimming with E. coli counts that were within provincial standards.

However, swimming was not recommended at Mooney’s Bay or Petrie East Bay beaches, where the E. coli counts exceeded those standards.
