The speed limit on Highway 416 south of Ottawa, and on sections of Highway 401 in eastern Ontario, increases to 110 kilometres per hour today.

The Ontario government announced in the spring that the speed limit would be raised by 10 km/h on on several sections of provincial highways in northern and southern Ontario, starting July 12.

That includes approximately 70 kilometres of Hwy. 416 between Hwy. 401 and Ottawa, and three sections of Hwy. 401 in eastern Ontario.

“All highway sections were selected based on their ability to safely accommodate higher speed limits. Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan have a maximum speed limit of 110 km/h, while in British Columbia, the maximum speed limit is 120 km/h,” the government said in an April press release.

In 2019, the Ontario government began exploring opportunities to increase speed limits on select Ontario highways, and in 2022, the government increased the speed limit on six sections of provincial highways in southern Ontario as well as two sections in northern Ontario on a two-year trial basis.

“Stunt driving penalties will continue to apply at 150 km/h. On the highway sections with increased speed limits, stunt driving penalties will apply at 40 km/h over the posted speed limit,” Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation said in a news release.
