Stabbing suspect now charged with first-degree murder

Charges against an 18-year-old Ottawa man have been upgraded to first-degree murder following the stabbing death of a youth in the Centrepointe area last week.

Ibrahim Ocal was originally charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon following the incident in the 100 block of Constellation Drive on May 2, the Ottawa Police Service said in a news release, but the murder charge was laid following the death of the younger teen two days later.

Ocal is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, the release added.

It also identified the victim as Ellis Smith, 15, but added that the family was requesting privacy at this time.
