Stranded residents rescued from balcony in Centretown fire

Firefighters used a ladder to rescue a person trapped on a third-floor balcony in a fire on Somerset Street late Thursday.

Just before 10 p.m., a 911 caller reported the person was trapped at an apartment building near the intersection of Somerset and O’Connor in the Centretown district.

Initial reports indicated heavy smoke and flames were visible.

Upon arrival, OFS confirmed the working fire and a ladder was set up to rescue the occupant.

The stranded person was rescued at 10:08 p.m. There were no reports of injuries.

An OC Transpo bus was sent to the scene to shelter the residents.

Victims services were also on the scene.

An OFS investigator has been dispatched to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
