Ontario Provincial Police say a 14-year-old will be “facing consequences” under the Youth Criminal Justice Act for allegedly making firearms threats to a school in Petawawa.
On Monday, OPP began investigating after the school received a threatening phone message to use a firearm at the school.
“Investigation found the youth responsible for orchestrating the threat did not have access to firearms and did not initially grasp the seriousness of such comments,” OPP said in a statement Tuesday.
The teen will have threatening charges diverted and face “extra-judicial measures” as per the Act, which governs the prosecution of youth aged 12 to 17 who are alleged to have committed crimes.
Police said the parents of the teen were notified. The name of the youth cannot be released.
“The OPP take all public safety threats seriously. Police and school officials continue to work together to support students and staff to ensure a safe learning environment.”
