A 16-year-old male has been charged with failure to comply with conditions and could soon face firearm- and theft-related after being arrested while in possession of a loaded handgun in Gatineau on Saturday.

The Gatineau Police Service said Tuesday that the additional charges had been submitted for review by Quebec’s Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions.

The teen was arrested Saturday morning after two calls were made to the municipal emergency services centre concerning an intoxicated individual who was disturbing the peace on Saint-Rédempteur Street in the Hull sector.

Near the intersection of Saint-Rédempteur and Allard Street, responding officers spotted an individual who matched the description of the callers along with two other individuals.

As officers subdued the suspect, a news release said, they saw that the teen’s shoulder bag contained what appeared to be a firearm, and it turned out to be a loaded weapon, which was seized.

On-site investigation led police to determine that the suspect had attempted to steal the vehicle of one of the two men with him at the time of the arrest. During the attempted theft, the teenager allegedly pointed the weapon at the victim.

The victim allegedly managed to get the suspect out of the vehicle and, as police arrived, assisted by a friend, was trying to prevent the suspect from taking the weapon out of the shoulder bag.

The youth later appeared in the youth chamber of Gatineau court.
