Thefts of trailers lead police to drug-charge arrest in Ottawa

Police said Friday that thefts of rental trailers in North Grenville and Smiths Falls had led investigators to a suspected drug dealer in Gatineau.

The Ontario Provincial Police East Region community street crime unit had begun investigating the theft of utility trailers in the area on Oct. 21 and Oct. 25.

These were linked to similar thefts on Oct. 27 and Oct. 28 in Smiths Falls.

Investigators in Smiths Falls and Gatineau identified a suspect and on Oct. 29 the OPP arrested a man at a location on Rideau Street in Ottawa.

Officers seized nearly 30 grams of suspected fentanyl and almost two grams of suspected crack cocaine.

Shane Riopelle, 43, of Gatineau, has been charged with two counts of possession of a Schedule 1 substance for trafficking and theft over $5,000.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brockville on Nov. 15.

He was turned over to Smiths Falls police and held for a bail hearing.
