A one-year-old child remained in critical condition at CHEO on Saturday while two adults were still in hospital in serious, but stable condition following a three-vehicle collision on Highway 417 in Ottawa’s west end on Friday.

An Ontario Provincial Police spokesperson said one adult and another child, age three and an occupant of the same vehicle, had been released from hospital after treatment for minor injuries.

Both children had been listed as three-year-olds originally, but that was updated on Saturday.

The crash occurred just past 4 p.m. on Friday, during the late afternoon traffic rush.

The OPP spokesperson said one vehicle travelling eastbound on the highway crossed the centre median and struck two others heading westbound.

The investigation into the cause of the crash was continuing, the spokesperson said, adding that no charges had been laid as of Saturday.

Highway 417 remained closed in both directions for several hours — westbound at Palladium Drive and eastbound at Carp Road — with eastbound lanes reopening just before 8 p.m. Friday, followed by the reopening of westbound lanes a few hours later.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or may have dashcam video was asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
