Trio charged after rocks thrown at moving vehicles from highway overpass

The Ontario Provincial Police arrested three people from the Ottawa area, including one youth, after they were caught throwing rocks at vehicles from an overpass on Highway 416 on Monday night.

Shortly before 8 p.m. on Monday, the Ottawa detachment of the OPP received multiple 911 calls regarding three individuals who were throwing rocks at cars from atop the railway bridge that crosses over Highway 416 near Richmond Road, a police news release said. One vehicle was struck and had significant damage to its windshield.

The individuals arrested ranged in age from 17 to 20, police said.

The two adults were charged with mischief under $5,000, while the youth was diverted from prosecution in accordance with provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the release added.

The two adults were released from custody on appearance notices and were scheduled to appear in Provincial Court on Sept. 6.
