Two Ottawa residents have been charged with animal cruelty after police responding to a call for service found a dog suffering severe burns to its face and body.

Police received a report of a dog in distress in a residence in the 400 block of MacLaren Street on Nov. 8.

The patrol officers found the dog with singed fur “all over its face and body,” police said in a release.

Deeming the animal to be in “critical distress,” bylaw officers were called to help seize the animal to prevent further serious injury and preserve its life.

The dog was examined and cared for at the Ottawa Humane Society. It is expected to make a full recovery.

The owners, identified as Grace McEachern, 24, and Jarvis Wandallo, 36, both of Ottawa, have been charged with:

  •  Willfully permitting unnecessary pain or suffering to an animal, and
  • Injuring a dog, bird or animal

McEachern was also charged with one count of breaching probation.

Both individuals were held on these charges and outstanding warrants.

The Ontario Animal Welfare Services is working with the Ottawa Police Service in conducting a parallel investigation into the incident.
