U.S. citizen charged with concealed weapon after boat search

A U.S. citizen’s boat trip on the St. Lawrence was cut short Thursday when OPP water patrols discovered an illegal handgun and ammunition in a safety check near Brockville.

In a social media post, OPP said the force’s Leeds & Grenville marine unit was patrolling the St. Lawrence River and stopped a watercraft to verify safety equipment on board.

During the search, the officers discovered a concealed firearm.

A loaded 9mm handgun was seized, along with two magazines with ammunition, and the operator was arrested.

The U.S. citizen was transported to the U.S. border, where Canadian Border Services assisted in the investigation.

The operator was charged criminally with carrying a concealed weapon, possession of prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition, and unauthorized importing or exporting.

He was later released and returned to the U.S.
