U.S. driver learns costly lesson in miles vs. kilometre measurement

Article content

A visitor from the United States had a welcome-to-Canada lesson on Thursday night, when he was hit with a stunt-driving ticket for driving at 161 km/h on Highway 417 in the Moodie Drive area.

Ontario Provincial Police said the driver claimed he was unaware he was speeding.

The limit in that area is 100 km/h, which is what he thought he was travelling, according to the OPP. But his speedometer displays speeds and distances in miles, so a reading of 100 m.p.h. meant the car was travelling at about 161 km/h.
