uOttawa profs’ union to hold strike vote set if conciliation fails next week

The union that represents University of Ottawa’s full-time professors and librarians has set dates for a strike vote if conciliation next week is unsuccessful.

The Association of Professors of the University of Ottawa (APUO) contract expired at the end of April and the union has been negotiating with the university since June 12 —including mediation, without an agreement with the university.

APUO has 1,311 members, but does not represent other academic staff, such as teaching assistants, researchers and sessional lecturers.

The union says workload and governance are the top issues.

The number of full-time professors has been capped, and the union is seeking an increase, said Jennifer Blair, AFUO’s mobilization officer.

“Class sizes are going up, and cuts to teaching assistants and administration services means we’re taking on more admin,” said Blair. “Students are getting less support.”

The union also wants representation on the university’s board of governors and is seeking across-the-board salary increases of 2.81 per cent and 2.84 per cent in a two-year agreement.

If the conciliation on Nov. 5 and 6 fails, the union is set to hold a vote on a strike mandate from Nov. 12 to 14.
