UPDATE: All but one Ottawa beaches now cleared for swimming

There was a bit of more good news for those wanting to beat the heat at City of Ottawa beaches on Saturday.

A day after test results posted by Ottawa Public Health showed that Britannia and Petrie East Bay beaches met “provincial bacterial standards,” an updated post on Saturday added Mooney’s Bay Beach to that list.

That left Petrie River, with an E. coli count of 237, as the only city-run beach that exceeded the provincial standards.

The E. coli count for Britannia was just 11, while it was 86 for Petrie East Bay and 187 for Mooney’s Bay.

Water test results are not available immediately as they take at least 18 hours to process in a laboratory. For this reason, swim advisories are issued based on water sample results from the previous day, as well as OPH knowledge of water quality at each beach in previous years and how they react to factors such as rainfall and bird activity.

A previous message on Thursday indicated that heavy rainfall was a factor in the elevated E. coli levels at Britannia and Petrie River beaches.
