Update: Chelsea lifts boil-water advisory for residents

Chelsea has lifted what it originally described as a “precautionary” boil-water advisory for residents served by the west Quebec municipality’s water system.

The advisory, which was lifted Wednesday, had been in place since last Friday, a week after a torrential downpour hit the area, impacting the water system’s filtration plant.

A parallel request for residents to reduce their water consumption as much as possible, allowing for maintenance operations at the filtration plant to take place, remained in effect. It is currently scheduled to be in place until Aug. 31.

On Aug. 15, Chelsea requested $1 million from the Quebec government to help fund recovery efforts following the heavy rain and winds.

“It’s still very (early) for a precise number (for recovery costs), but the amount confirmed to (Quebec’s public safety department) in the initial estimate is indeed $1 million,” Ghislaine Grenier, Chelsea’s director of human resources and communications, said in an email.
