A modest, makeshift bouquet marked the location Saturday morning at Hampton Park Plaza where a 28-year-old Ottawa man had been fatally shot the night before.
In a brief release, the Ottawa Police Service said the shooting took place shortly after 6 p.m. Friday and identified the deceased as Adam Abdullahi Elmi of Ottawa.
No suspects are in custody, and no other details were released.

Kevin Patel, the owner of the Fat Bastard Burrito location at Hampton Park Plaza, the mall at Carling and Kirkwood avenues, said Elmi was among the customers at his eatery just before he was shot.
“He came to our store with a friend,” said Patel, who was working Friday, but at the back of his business. “He went outside and someone shot him.”
Police have asked Patel’s businesses and his neighbours for surveillance videos, and are asking for footage from anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the incident.
Nadhila Setiawan, who works at Hampton Paints, the business beside Patel’s, said she was at the back of the paint store Friday when she heard several loud noises out front.
“I thought it was someone banging on the window,” she said.
She soon saw the commotion outside, including a man lying on the sidewalk with passersby attending to him. Setiawan said she overheard a woman calling 911 who said that she saw a gunman run to a white car that sped off.
On X, formerly known as Twitter, Ottawa police posted that they and emergency responders were called at approximately 6:09 p.m. to the plaza. They found the victim, who had life-threatening injuries, and who was transported to hospital where he died soon after.

By Saturday morning, the police tape at the crime scene had been removed. Nothing remained except for some faint stains on the pavement where the victim had lain, plus a few yellow flowers tied together.
The fatal shooting at the plaza was the second one in Ottawa in as many Fridays. A week earlier, Yousef Salaman, 19, was killed in a shooting in the 1700 block of Russell Road, which is near the intersection of Smyth Road and St. Laurent Boulevard in Ottawa’s east end.
Police are seeking information about both shootings. Anyone with information should contact the homicide unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 5493. Anonymous tips can be made to Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477 or at crimestoppers.ca.
