The Ottawa Police Service announced Wednesday that no criminal offence had taken place following an investigation into a report of a suspicious incident in Orléans on Oct. 6.

Five days after that, police issued an advisory requesting public assistance in identifying a vehicle and its driver connected to the incident.

“We extend our gratitude to the public for their assistance in identifying the driver involved, which led to a quick and positive resolution,” police said in announcing the conclusion of the investigation by the Sexual Assault and Child Abuse section.

The original release from police said the suspect driver and vehicle had approached a group of children and offered candy before driving away after another adult approached.

That news release also said Ottawa police reminded parents to frequently review safety tips for children, including what they should do when approached by a stranger.

Where possible, avoid walking alone, the release advised, adding that those who must walk alone should:

  • Ensure a family member or caregiver knows your route and arrival time;
  • Do not talk to strangers;
  • Do not accept rides from strangers;
  • If an unknown adult is seeking your attention, do not approach them or the vehicle;
  • If being followed, go to a public place, a known residence or shout for help.
