Update: ‘Unfounded’ threat closes Ottawa public libraries

A threat that led to the closure of all Ottawa Public Library branches and their attached recreation and cultural facilities was “unfounded,” the Ottawa Police Service said a few hours later.

An online update from police just after 6 p.m. said the call reporting the “threat to public safety” had been received about two and a half hours earlier,

“The City of Ottawa closed all public libraries and cultural facilities as a safety precaution, per their protocols,” the police post said. “Police responded, investigated the matter and the threat was deemed unfounded. The police investigation continues.”

The City of Ottawa advised people to “avoid these areas until further notice,” but about 6:30 p.m. updated that notice to confirm that the incident had been resolved “and the facilities will resume their regular hours of operation.”

The Ottawa Public Library has more than 30 branches across the city.
