An investigation continues following the death of a woman in a fire in the 100 block of Deschamps Avenue in the Vanier district Friday night.

First responders were called to the scene shortly after 9 p.m.

Ottawa Paramedics said when they arrived a woman was on the ground outside the fire.

A paramedic spokesman said a burning mattress was also found at the scene, but it’s not known whether it was the source of the original fire.

Paramedics and firefighters attempted to resuscitate the woman, and she was sent to hospital in life-threatening condition.

Police said she later died of her injuries. Police did not identify the victim, saying only she was in her 50s.

Police are investigating the matter along with Ottawa Fire Services and the Ontario Fire Marshall’s office.

“There is nothing suspicious at this time,” police said in a release.
