A vigilant owner spotted online details for the sale of his stolen bicycle and tipped off the Gatineau Police Service to its whereabouts, leading to the arrest of two people, police said Wednesday.
A 37-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman, both from Gatineau were subsequently released from custody, but police have submitted charges of theft, possession of property obtained by crime and trafficking in property obtained by crime to Quebec’s Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions, a news release said.

The high-end bike was also returned to its owner.
It had been stolen on Sunday from the site of the Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival (FMG) site. The owner, a visitor from Quebec’s Abitibi region, returned home that evening and then found an online advertisement for a bicycle matching his.
After the owner reported the ad, the Gatineau Police Service set up an appointment with the supposed seller of the bicycle and, at the meeting site, arrested the suspects.
Police praised the bicycle owner for contacting them to recover his property, saying he had been able to act “without endangering his own safety.”
