Environment Canada forecasters don’t like the looks of a weather system developing and  have issued a “severe thunderstorm watch” for Ottawa and surrounding areas.

The warning area also includes Kemptville, Cornwall and Pembroke areas, as well as Prescott and Russell.

“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” the agency cautioned.

“The main threats will be strong winds, torrential downpours and hail. There is also a risk of a tornado today, especially towards the Ottawa River Valley.”

As a general guide, Environment Canada describe events that could occur in a heavy thunderstorm as:

  • Strong winds gusting up to 110 km/h
  • Torrential downpours with 50 mm falling within an hour
  • Nickel to golf ball sized hail
  • Risk of a tornado

The weather office says the storms could hit any time from late Wednesday morning, through this evening.
