A male youth has been charged with two counts of assault with a weapon and two counts of harassment after an incident involving fireworks in Stittsville.

Two female youths were walking on a sidewalk in the Main Street and Fernbank Road area at about 11:30 p.m. on July 1 when they were approached by a white SUV, Ottawa police said in a news release Monday. The vehicle stopped and a passenger from the rear of the SUV then aimed fireworks directly at the youths who were walking.

Neither female was injured, but they were chased by the driver of the vehicle for a short time after they fled the scene, police said.

After an investigation, it was found that four male youths were in the vehicle at the time of the incident. One was deemed to have had no part in it, two were put through a diversion program and the other is now facing the assault and harassment charges.

Police said a video of the incident had been shared widely on social media.
