64 charges, warnings issued in one night in a Ottawa neighbourhood

Ottawa police are continuing to target specific communities in the nation’s capital for safety initiatives.

Based off need identified by residents and police data, officers were in the Carlington community on Nov. 13 to enforce traffic. Partnering with the Neighbourhood Resource Team and the force’s traffic unit, police focused their efforts on several streets including Merivale Road, Kirkwood Avenue, Carling Avenue and Fisher Avenue.

The roads were identified as “high-concern.” Police note the streets are main arteries and experience heavy traffic and account for the majority of complains in the area.

Over the course of one night police issued:

  • 29 Provincial offence notices issued
  • 19 Part 3 Summons issued
  • 16 Warnings issued

One of those charges was for a 19-year-old man who was speeding. Police said he was travelling 95 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on Fisher Avenue near Shillington Avenue. The teen was charged with stunt driving; the vehicle was impounded and his licence was suspended for 30 days.

The driver could face other ramifications if convicted included a $2,000 fine, six demerit points and a year-long driving prohibition.

Another driver was seen travelling at a high rate of speed on Fisher Avenue, but officers weren’t able to stop them. According to police, the driver “engaged in dangerous driving” and due to the risk of safety, officer did not pursue the vehicle.

Other offences laid by police include:

  • Driving while under suspension
  • Operating a motor vehicle – no licence
  • Operating a motor vehicle – no insurance
  • Plate not authorized for vehicle
  • Failing to apply for permit on becoming new owner
  • No valid permit
  • Failing to surrender driver’s licence
  • Failing to surrender insurance card

This is one of several initiatives police have conducted over the last year including in the communities of Barrhaven, Nepean, Riverside South and Orléans.
