A complete guide to Canada Day 2024 in Ottawa

National Canada Day celebrations:

Enjoy the shows and activities taking place at LeBreton Flats Park on Monday, July 1.

Canada Day celebrations take place between 9 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. at LeBreton Flats Park, with a long list of activities happening all around Ottawa-Gatineau.

Daytime ceremony – 12 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.

The daytime ceremony kicks off the national celebrations with a look at our past, present and future. It underlines important anniversaries and themes while recognizing the diversity of our country. You’ll also have a chance to see the Canada Day Royal Canadian Air Force Centennial Flypast.

Evening show – 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

A two-hour free concert to unite music lovers across the country.

Tim Hortons Canada Day Fireworks – 10 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. 

Celebrations will end on a high note in Canada’s Capital Region. See the sky light up over the Ottawa-Gatineau region with the Tim Hortons Canada Day Fireworks.

The best places to watch the fireworks:

The Tim Hortons Canada Day Fireworks will be fired from near LeBreton Flats Park in Ottawa.

Road closures and public transit:

Getting around downtown on Canada Day will be complicated with numerous road closures and parking restrictions near Parliament Hill and LeBreton Flats.

City officials are encouraging you to use public transit, if possible, as OC Transpo is offering free service all day on O-Train Line 1, buses and Para Transpo.

You’re advised to plan your route ahead of time and expect delays.

Transit Services:

Service will operate on an enhanced Sunday schedule on Monday with extra service all day and into the evening.

Rural Shopper Route 301 will not run on Monday, July 1.

Use the Travel Planner or Transit, the recommended app for OC Transpo customers, to plan your trip.

The Rideau Centre OC Transpo Customer Service Centre will be open on Monday, July 1 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The OC Transpo Lost and Found (Heartwood House) will be closed on Monday, July 1. Customers can call 613-560-5000 to report a lost item.

Para Transpo: 

Regular bookings or recurring trips are automatically cancelled on Monday, July 1. Customers can book trips for Canada Day starting one week ahead by calling 613-560-5000 or using My Para Transpo.

Para Transpo customers can also text 57272 to connect with customer service representatives from 6 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. for cancellations or information. Standard rates apply.

The reservations line will be open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The trip cancellation line will be open from 6 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.

The Taxi Coupon line will remain open.

Canada Day celebrations in your community:

  • Barrhaven
    • Canada Day Barrhaven(link is external) will take place starting at 8:30 am and end with fireworks at 10 pm. Strandherd Drive will be closed between Dealership Drive/Kennevale Drive and Borrisokane Road from 9:30 pm to 10:30 pm.
  • Canada Day Beacon Hill Fireworks
    • The Beacon Hill Community Association will have a fireworks display at Loyola Park at dusk.
  • Canada Day Road Races, Kanata
  • Dunrobin
    • The Dunrobin Canada Day Celebration will take place at the Dunrobin Community Centre from 4 pm until after the fireworks at sunset.
  • Greely
    • The Greely Community Association Canada Day event will take place at the Greely Community Centre from noon to 11 pm with fireworks at dusk,
  • Kanata
    • Canada Day in Kanata(link is external) will take place at Walter Baker Park on June 30 from 6 to 11 pm and on July 1 from 8 am to 11 pm. Charlie Rogers Place will be closed between Ron Maslin Way and the Kanata Recreation Centre on June 30 from 5  to 11 pm and July 1 from 7 am to 11:30 pm.
  • Orléans 
  • Osgoode
    • Osgoode’s Canada Day Festival(link is external) will take place at Osgoode Village Park and the Stuart Holmes Arena from 11:30 am until 11 pm. Osgoode Main Street will be closed between Nixon Drive and 5673 Osgoode Main Street from 1:45 to 3 pm
  • Riverside South
  • Stittsville

Closures and schedule changes:

Malls:

Most malls will be closed, except for the Rideau Centre which will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Tanger Outlet Mall will also be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Grocery stores:

Four Ottawa grocery stores will keep their doors open on Canada Day:

  • Farm Boy Rideau Centre: Open Canada Day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Loblaws on Isabella Street: Open July 1 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Loblaws on Rideau Street: Open Canada Day from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Whole Foods Market at Lansdowne: Open July 1 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

LCBO/Beer Stores:

All LCBO locations will be closed.

As for The Beer Store, there will be eight Ottawa locations open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Canada Day.

City Services:

Client Service Centres:

The City’s 3-1-1 Contact Centre will be open for urgent matters only. Please visit ottawa.ca/311 for more information.

All services at Ottawa City Hall, Ben Franklin Place, Orléans and the City’s Provincial Offences Court will be closed.

The Business Licensing Centre at 735 Industrial Avenue will be closed.

The City of Ottawa Spay and Neuter Clinic at 26 Concourse Gate will be closed.

The City of Ottawa Archives and Gallery 112 at the James Bartleman Centre will be closed from Saturday, June 29 to Monday, July 1.

The Barbara Ann Scott Gallery at City Hall will be closed on Monday, July 1.

Green bin, recycling and garbage collection:

There will be no curbside green bin, recycling, garbage or bulky item collection on Monday, July 1. Pick up will take place on Tuesday, July 2. In addition, the collection will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week.

Residents can sign up to receive collection reminders and service alerts by email or phone call at ottawa.ca/CollectionCalendar.

Multi-residential garbage containers will be collected on the regular scheduled day. Collections of multi-residential recycling containers, bulky items and green bins will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week.

The Trail Waste Facility will be open on Monday, July 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Parking:

All City parking regulations apply.

Recreation and cultural services

Most community centres and recreation facilities will be closed, with a limited number of indoor pools, arenas, and recreation and fitness centres open and operating on a modified schedule. Please check the facility pages on ottawa.ca for details.

Outdoor pools, splash pads and wading pools will be open. Beaches will be open with lifeguards on duty. Hours, details and locations are available at Outdoor swim and splash.

Arts Court, Nepean Creative Arts Centre, Nepean Visual Arts Centre, City-operated museums, Meridian Theatres @ Centrepointe, and Shenkman Arts Centre will be closed.

Most indoor pools, arenas, and recreation and fitness centres will be open or operating on a modified schedule. Please check the facility pages on ottawa.ca for details. Please note that some regular public swims may be cancelled on short notice due to a shortage of lifeguards. It is recommended you confirm by checking with the facility before leaving home.  

Ottawa Public Health:

The Site program office and supervised consumption services at 179 Clarence Street will be closed. The Site mobile van will operate from 5 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

The Sexual Health Clinic and satellite clinics will be closed.

Dental clinics will be closed.

The Parenting-In-Ottawa drop-ins will be closed on Monday, July 1.

Connect with a registered nurse from Health811 for free, secure, and confidential health advice. Service is available in English and French, with translation support also offered in other languages.

Employment and Social Services:

All four Employment and Social Services offices will be closed on Monday, July 1:

  • 2339 Ogilvie Road
  • 100 Constellation Drive
  • 2020 Walkley Road

Municipal childcare services:

All municipal childcare centres will be closed on Monday, July 1.

Ottawa Public Library:

All branches of Ottawa Public Library (including Bookmobile, Homebound services and InfoService) will be closed on Monday, July 1.

Digital content, services, and program listings are available through the Ottawa Public Library website. Virtual programs are available on OPL’s YouTube channel. Regular hours resume on Tuesday, July 2.
