Firefighters “quickly” brought a balcony fire under control on Thursday morning.
At about 10:39 a.m. crews received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting “black smoke” and “flames” from a balcony on the sixth floor of a 17-storey high-rise apartment.
Firefighters were dispatched to the 0-100 block on Bayswater Avenue in Ottawa’s Hintonburg neighbourhood. On scene crews confirmed a shared balcony with a divider was on fire.
When inside the apartment, firefighters saw the blaze had come in through the glass patio door and was spreading. After extinguishing the flames, officials searched the unit twice over to ensure no occupants were inside.
The fire was declared under control by 11:04 a.m. It did not spread to any other units, according to a post on X from the department.
Before residents could return, crews used high-pressurized fans to ventilate the area. No injuries were reported.
Ottawa fire is now investigating the cause.
