Charges laid after speeding, window tint impacted 5 vehicle collision in Westboro

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) has charged a driver with dangerous operation, following a five-vehicle collision in Westboro on Sunday, May 12.

The motorist exceeded the speed limit, going 144 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on Richmond Road.

Additionally, the vehicle’s dark black reflective tint impacted the driver’s ability to see, wrote OPS in a X post.

According to OPS, the 28-year-old male driver has been charged with:

  • Dangerous operation — which is a more serious charge since it’s under the Criminal Code, as opposed to a traffic offence.
  • Colour coating obscuring interior (i.e. tinted windows, contrary to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act)

The five-vehicle collision resulted in extensive damage to all vehicles and two people were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver who caused the accident did not flee and was not transported to hospital from the scene, said OPS.

While a warrant was required in this case, more time was needed to complete the investigative process, police added.
