Driver facing numerous minimum $5,000 in fines after OPP alerted license plate out of service

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Ottawa Detachment stopped a vehicle driving along Highway 417 on December 25th.

The driver was pulled over after an Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) camera notified an officer that the license plate had been taken out of service, wrote OPP in an X post.

Following further investigation, OPP discovered the vehicle was uninsured and the driver held a G1 licence.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police, the driver was charged with the following:

  • Operating a motor vehicle without insurance
  • Using a licence plate not authorized for the vehicle
  • G1 driver operating on a prohibited highway
  • G1 driver operating while unaccompanied by qualified driver
  • G1 driver carrying a passenger in the front seat

The minimum fine for operating a vehicle without insurance is $5,000, wrote OPP.

OPP Highway Safety Division is reminding drivers to slow down and move over for emergency first responders on highways.

Additionally, OPP East Region is urging drivers to pack emergency and first aid kits, warm clothing, blankets, water and perishable food, especially for those taking road trips over the holidays.

Booster cables, sand or cat litter, a small shovel, extra windshield washer fluid and an external battery are also recommended, wrote OPP in a post on X.
