Firefighters kept busy with a balcony blaze, multi-unit building alarm

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) responded to two separate incidents of fires in the nation’s capital, both times they were able to contain the blazes.

On July 18 at 9:15 a.m., firefighters got a call from a monitoring agency saying there were active alarms at a multi-residential unit. The four-storey building is located in the 300 block of MacLaren Street.

Shortly after, multiple 9-1-1 callers reported black and grey smoke from the structure.

Two minutes after being dispatched, crews confirmed the location and declared an active fire. By this time residents were all evacuated.

Crews found the fire in a unit on the third flood and were able to quickly extinguish it.

Five minutes after arriving on scene the fire was declared under control. Two searches were done and no occupants were found inside.

The second incident happened just before noon, as fire crews were then called to the 700 block of Albert Street where an end unit townhome had smoke pouring from it.

Two minutes after a 9-1-1 caller reported the flames coming from a second floor balcony, crews arrived.

The fire quickly spread up the exterior of the home and breached a window. Officials searched the home for people and quickly brought the fire under control before it could spread further.

“The exteriors walls were opened up and confirmed there was no fire extension,” a post on X reads. “The attic was also checked for any fire extension and it was confirmed there was none.”

As of 2:00 p.m., a truck remained on scene to monitor for any flare ups.

In both instances a fire investigator is on scene to determine what caused the fires.
