Jon Bon Snowvi, Good SnOmens: Votes open to name Ottawa snowplows

The first-ever City of Ottawa snowplow contest is open for votes with 24 vehicles needing names before the start of winter.

The nation’s capital is asking children and teens under the age of 16 to help name the snowplows and also raise awareness on plow safety. The city treats and clears over 13,000 kilometres of roadway including Highway 174 and the Transitway to keep vehicles moving in the winter.

“Clearing that distance of snow is equivalent to driving from Halifax to Vancouver (and back) in a snowstorm,” the city said in a release.

The “hardworking” snowplows need names and between Oct. 14 and 21 people can place votes on their favourites. Options were submitted by the public, which included some pop culture references, iconic Canadian heritage and wordplay.

People are being asked to pick their top 24.

Some options include:

  • Austin Plowers
  • Fast and Flurious
  • Frosty the Snowplow
  • Drift Destroyer
  • Jon Bon Snowvi
  • It’s Giving Snow
  • GoodSnOmens
  • Plowasaurus Rex
  • Plower
  • Snow Big Deal
  • Taylor Drift
  • You’re a Blizzard, Harry.

The winning names will be announced at the Transportation Committee meeting on Oct. 24.
