Kinburn barn goes up in flames; no people or animals harmed

Ottawa firefighters close to three hours tackling a barn fire in Kinburn Monday afternoon.

Ottawa Fire Services (OPS) responded to the 2900 block of Kinburn Side Road around 1:15 p.m. on Oct. 28. A 9-1-1 caller reported a car inside their bar had caught fire and that the barn contained fuel and other combustibles.

Firefighters arrived and confirmed smoke and flames coming from all four sides of the structure, which also contained antique sleds and carriages. OFS confirmed there were no animals inside the barn and that everyone who was inside when the fire started had exited safely.

Firefighters began a fast attack and advanced several hose lines towards the barn, while an aerial ladder was set up to attack the flames from above. Crews used tanker trucks to shuttle water to the scene from a nearby water source because the fire was located in an area of the city without hydrants.

Around 2:15 p.m., the structure began to collapse, and it was shortly after 4 p.m. when the fire was declared under control.

An excavator was called to the scene to move debris so firefighters could extinguish hot spots.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
