Late night fire in Rideau-Vanier possibly caused by candle

There are no injuries reported after a late-night fire in Rideau-Vanier.

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) responded to a highrise building in the 300 block of Montgomery Street around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17.

A 9-1-1 caller had reported a fire that had possibly been started by a candle.

Upon arrival, fire crews confirmed heavy smoke and that the buildings sprinklers had been deployed.

A working fire was quickly declared in order to dispatch more resources to the scene.

Firefighters moved inside the building to begin tackling the fire, and two searches confirmed there were no occupants inside.

The fire was declared under control at 11:10 p.m. and was contained to the area of origin before it could spread.

Residents were allowed to re-enter the building once the air quality was determined to be safe.

A fire investigator is now working to determine the cause of the blaze.
