Man charged after failed attempt to flee from police on Hwy. 417

A young man from Ottawa is facing charges after a failed attempt to flee from police at a traffic stop.

Shortly before 7 p.m. on Monday, May 20, members of the Ottawa Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attempted to stop a speeding vehicle on Highway 417 near Terry Fox Drive.

According to the OPP, the driver was clocked as fast as 160 km/h and the vehicle was seen weaving in and out of lanes.

Officers used the Automated Licence Plate Recognition system (ALPR) to obtain the vehicles plate and track down the driver.

An 18-year-old is facing the following Highway Traffic Act (HTA) Charges:

  • Drive Motor Vehicle – Perform Stunt – Excessive Speed
  • Speeding: 50+km/h Over Posted Speed Limit
  • Fail to Stop for Police

The accused is scheduled to appear in court in Ottawa at a later date.
