OPP warns of large bear in Carleton Place

Lanark OPP is advising residents of a large bear in Carleton Place. It has been spotted in the area of Cemetery Sideroad and St. Fillans Road.

Bear sightings are not uncommon in Lanark County, it is one of the many places in Ontario where black bears live.

But the OPP is asking for residents to take precautions and report any sightings of this particularly large bear.

“Do not approach and report to OPP if observed,” the force posted on X.

The Ministry of Natural Resources has tips on how to bear wise as sightings become more common with widespread development and the loss of natural food sources.

When walking through wooded areas make noise by whistling, talking or crunching fallen leaves.

If you do come across a bear, slowly back away, take shelter if possible, and drop any food you may be holding. Do not run, swim or climb a tree. Avoid making eye contact and do not play dead unless you are being attacked by a mother bear protecting her cubs.

The MNR also reminds residents to keep their dogs on leash as unleashed dogs can lead a bear to you or get hurt itself.

Killing a bear in self-defence must be an action of last resort.

The MNR also operates a toll-free Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327.
