Ottawa encouraging youth to get involved in ‘Paint it Up!’

The city is calling all artistic youth this summer to help beautify Ottawa neighbourhoods.

The Paint It Up! program is returning, with opportunities for youth 12 to 25 to get involved.

More than 2,925 young people have been involved in painting 103 murals across Ottawa as part of the youth engagement program since 2010.

‘Idris’ participated in an art project on Gloucester Street last year.

“I think my favourite part was just being able to throw stress and worry to the side for a little bit,” he said. “The only thing I had to worry about was which shade of purple spray paint I wanted to use. It was a nice feeling that at risk (and) homeless youth don’t get to feel a lot.”

The city says the program helps empower youth, get them involved in the community, while flexing their artistic muscles.

Project applications have already been submitted, and the final locations of murals will be announced on Wednesday, May 1st on the City of Ottawa website.
